Job Summary

The Department of Mathematics at Jacksonville University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the assistant professor level starting in August 2024. A doctorate in mathematics or a closely related field is required before the starting date. All specialties will be considered, but special consideration may be given to applicants with a background in applied mathematics or data science.

The department offers BA and BS degrees in mathematics as well as a BS in data science in collaboration with the Department of Computing Science. The department is committed to providing an exceptional learning environment to a diverse undergraduate audience while using modern approaches to pedagogy and use of technology. The successful candidate will have a strong interest in undergraduate teaching and mentorship and is expected to maintain an active research program, including undergraduate research, in addition to providing service to the department and university.

The standard teaching load is 24 credits per academic year and typically includes a broad range of lower-level and upper-level courses. Opportunities for course release time and teaching online and during winter and summer terms may be available.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

Most faculty positions do not have supervisory responsibilities

Some may have supervisory responsibilities when the faculty member is serving in a Director or Associate Dean position for additional compensation and or release time. This will be specified in the contract.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Teach classes—a typical load is 24 credit-hours annually
  • Engage in research/scholarship
  • Supervise student research projects
  • Supervise student internships
  • Participate in university service at the department, school, college, or university level

  • The ability to teach a broad range of lower-level and upper-level courses
  • The ability to incorporate technology into classroom teaching
  • The ability to supervise and conduct research and supervise student research in area of expertise
  • The ability to work with diverse students and small class sizes
  • Participation in departmental, school, college, or university service
  • Excellent oral and written skills
  • Time management and organizational skills
  • The ability to work in a collaborative and cooperative manner

Education, Certificates, Licenses, & Experience

  • A Ph.D. in Mathematics or a closely related field by the time of appointment in August 2024

Physical Requirements

  • Manual dexterity to efficiently operate a computer keyboard and other business machines
  • Adequate hearing to communicate effectively in person and virtually
  • Near vision sufficient to read written communications and computer display screens
  • Stamina to teach up to 24 hours weekly
